Prof. Christophe Coupé received a PhD degree in cognitive science in 2003 from the University of Lyon 2. He then worked as a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), until joining HKU in 2018. His research interests lie at the intersection of linguistics, computer science and cognitive science. After studying questions pertaining to language evolution and language diversity with computational and statistical models, he is currently investigating issues of language complexity, animal communication and social psychology with tools from machine learning and natural language processing.
Besides quantitative approaches, Prof. Coupé also promotes the use of first-person approaches in cognitive science, and especially the micro-phenomenological interview, which he has used to study the relationships between caregivers and patients in health settings.
